Today, May 27, the 2020 Mount Qomolangma survey mountaineering team successfully summited Mount Qomolangma, the world's highest peak.

Mount Qomolangma (Chinese pronunciation: zhumulangma; Tibetan: ཇོ་མོ་གླང་མ,pronounced qomolangma; Nepali: सगरमाथा, pronounced sagarmatha), also known as Mount Everest, or Qomo Peak or Our Lady ’s Peak for short, is the main peak of the Himalayas and the highest mountain above sea level in the world, known as the third pole of the world, or the Roof of the World.

In Tibetan, "Qomo" means "Goddess", "Langma" means "Mother Elephant", and then Qomolangma means "Mother of the Earth".

Mt Qomolangma stands at the border of the central Himalayas between China and Nepal, capped with accumulated eternal snow. Its snow peak sends out silver radiance year after year. Its waist is hidden in the clouds.

With the year-round average temperature of - 29 ° C, Mt Qomolangma is composed of about 15,000 glaciers and several highest mountains in the world. Between these ridges and cliffs are lying 548 continental glaciers, with a total area of 1,457.07 square kilometers and an average thickness of 7,260 meters.

Earth scientists estimate that Mt Qomolangma is 50 to 60 million years old, a youngster by geological standards. The mountain was formed by the upward force generated when the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates collided, pushing up the rocks that formed the highest mountain on Earth. That force is still at work today, squeezing each other at a rate of 5.08 cm per year, and pushing Mt Qomolangma's summit about 1.27 cm (a quarter of an inch) higher each year.

The height of Mt Qomolangma measured by China in 1975 was 8,884.13 meters (29,029 feet), and 8,844.43 meters (29,017.2 feet) in 2005.

The actual summit of the mountain is a small dome of snow about the size of a dining room table.

In May, 2020, China started a new round of measurement of the height of Mt Qomolangma.

The measurement will combine the use of satellite, accurate leveling and snow-level radar technologies and the result will be used in geodynamics research. Moreover, data obtained including the height of the mount top, snow depth, meteorology and wind speed will offer a first-hand reference point for glacier monitoring and ecological protection.

In addition to the striking Beidou and 5G, instruments and equipments such as China-made zenith meters, gravimeters, peak surveyor beacons, and ultra-long-distance rangefinders for trianglar intersection measurement are also used in tis survey. This elevation survey will comprehensively use the most advanced technologies as GNSS satellite survey, snow depth radar survey, gravity survey, astronomical survey, satellite remote sensing and other technologies.
