正确使用二”和“两”

         Use "二(two)" and "两(two)" Correctly

很多学习汉语的朋友会被汉语中的“二”和“两”所困扰,究竟二者的区别何在,究竟什么时候使用“二”,什么时候使用“两”呢?

Many Chinese learners will be troubled by "二(two)" and "两(two)" in Chinese. What is the differences between them? And when should we use "二" and when should we use "两" on earth?

现在,杨老师来为大家梳理“二”和“两”的关系。

Now, JYang will sort out the relationship between "二" and "两" for you.

汉语中有“二”和“两”,是因为“二”和“两”在汉语中是两个不同的概念。

There are "二" and "两" in Chinese due to the fact that "二" and "两”" are of two different concepts in Chinese.

1 我们先说“两”。“两”大约等于英语中的基数词two,而“两”表示的是数量,即表示两个同类或平等的人或物,如两本书=two books(强调是两本,不是一本也不是三本),两把椅子=two chairs(强调是两把,不是一把也不是三把),两个学生=two students,两个月=two months,两个班=two classes,两次世界大战=two world wars。

Let's talk about "二" first. "二" means approximately the cardinal word two in English, while "两”" means quantity, that is, two people or things of the same kind or equal nature, such as 两本书(two books, the emphasis is two, not one book or three books), 两把椅子(two chairs, the emphasis is two, not one or three), 两个学生(two students), 两个月(two months), 两个班(two classes), and 两次世界大战(two world wars).

顺便说一下,其实“两”最初的意思不是二,在3,000多年前商代“两”的意思是两匹并列的马拉的马车,后来“两”就引申出“二”的含义,表示并列的两个物体。

By the way, in reality, originally "两”" didn’t mean two. In the Shang Dynasty more than 3,000 years ago, "两" meant two parallel horses drawn carriages. Later, "两" extended its meaning of "two" to juxtaposition(two parallel objects).

2 “二”又是什么概念呢?“二”相当于序数词,表示的是顺序,即说明人或物在序列中的位置。如二月即February(即一年中第二个月份),二班即Class Two,二次大战(二次世界大战/二战)即World War Two,二楼即second floor,二姐即second elder sister,第二课即Lesson 2,第二大城市即the second biggest city等等。

Then what is the concept of "二"? "二" is equivalent to an ordinal number, which indicates order, that is, the position of the person or something in the sequence. For example, 二月 is February (the second month of the year), 二班 is Class Two, 二次大战 (the second World War) is World War Two, 二楼 is second floor, and 二姐 is second elder sister , 第二课 is Lesson 2, 第二大城市 is the second biggest city, and so on.

因此,two world wars不能说成“二次世界大战”,World War Two也不能说成“两次世界大战”毕竟“二”和“两”的概念是很不同的。

Therefore, two world wars cannot be said to be "二次世界大战", and World War Two cannot be said to be "two world wars"; after all, the concepts of "二" and "两" are quite different.

3 需要注意的几种情况 Something needed attention

其实,语言需要经常练习,“二”和“两”的不同用法经过练习就会成为习惯,张口就来。

In fact, language needs to be practiced frequently, and the different usages of "二" and "两" will become a habit after practice, and when you open your mouth, they will come out automatically.

1)数数时读作“二”不读作“两”,如1,2,3,4读作一,二,三,四。

When counting, it is read as "二" rather than "两". For example, 1, 2, 3, and 4 are read as one, 二, three, and four.

读数字时也读作二,如20读作二十,222读作二百二十二,0.2读作零点二, 2%读作百分之二,1/2读作二分之一,2/5读作五分之二。

When reading numbers, it is also read as 二. For example, 20 is read as 二十, 222 is read as 二百二十二, 0.2 is read as 零点二, 2% is read as 百分之二, and 1/2 is read as 二分之一, and 2/5 is read as 五分之二.

但是时间2:20要读作两点二十。

But time 2:20 should be read as 两点二十.

2)量词前面读作“两”不读“二”,例如两架飞机,两本词典,两台电脑,两所大学,两块手表等等。

Before the measure words it is read as "两" but not "二", such as 两架 airplanes, 两本 dictionaries, 两台 computers, 两所 universities, 两块 watches, etc.

不过,“二人”、“二者”、“二位”等说法从宋朝的官话中流传至今,此时强调的是作为整体看待的人(或物),二后面不应再有量词。

However, the terms "二人", "二者", and "二位" have been passed down from Song Dynasty's Mandarin. In this case, people (or things) as a whole is emphasized, and there should be no measure words after them.

3)表示度量衡的量词前边用“两”,有时也可以用“二”。例如“两米布”,有时也可以说成“二米布”。

Use "两" before the measure words for weights and measures. Sometimes "二" can be used. For example, sometimes "两尺cloth(two meters of cloth" can be said as "二米cloth(two meters of cloth".

4)有些关于二和三的固定说法,如“两三个”不说“二三个”,“三三两两”不说“三三二二”。但当数字大于二十时,则说“二”不说“两”,例如二三百,二三十万。

In some fixed expressions with two and three, we say "两三个(about two or three)" but we do not say "二三个", we say "三三两两(in twos or threes)" but we do not say "三三二二”. But when the number is bigger than twenty, we say "二" but not "两", such as 二三百(two to three hundred), 二三十万(two to three hundred thousand).

5)汉语中还有个 “俩”,意思是“两个”,后面不可再有“个”字、或其它量词,例如:哥儿俩(即哥儿两个),咱俩(即我们两个)。

There is also a "俩" in Chinese, which means "two", and it must not be followed by “个”or other measure words, such as 哥儿俩 (the two brothers), and 咱俩(we two/both of us).
